Planting Garlic

For years I've been meaning to plant garlic. But I just don't get to it.  But I wish I had each July when I am buying garlic once again, grown by more ambitious gardeners.  And it is always delicious!  Funny thing, each time I buy some I ask, "is this type good to plant?" and the answer is aways an encouraging yes!  The garlic you typically buy in the store just does not compare.

So here goes.

I have 3 bulbs.  The farmer I bought them from called them Red Russian.  I did a little research (very little) and I did come upon this note from West Coast Seeds  https://www.westcoastseeds.com

"The distinctive wrapper leaves of these big bulbs are slightly purple. Red Russian garlic has the ability to withstand soggy winter soils better than any of the others"

Sounds like I have the right garlic! Winters are pretty soggy here.

It's October and I'm dressed for planting.

Found a spot.  Needs a little weeding though.

Soil is worked and ready.

Garlic sniffers seem to approve.

What's this now?  I walked away to get a tool.

Chase the dog away.  Separate the bulbs and remove the papery outer stuff

Pointy end up flat end down. Got it!

Chase dog away again. Something about soft dirt I think.

Cover with mulch.  I have plenty of dead leaves so I gathered those up. Also, as advised, put some thorny branches down to keep animals from digging up your garlic.  That makes sense to me!

Now we wait until Spring!

  1. I want to try this! How deep do you plant the garlic?

  2. Sorry I haven't responded! I have grown amazing garlic for 2 years in a row now. You plant it so you can cover it with a couple inches of soil.
